Trump critic George Conway files papers for U.S. House bid in New York

George Conway, a onetime supporter of President Donald Trump who has become a vocal critic in recent years, has filed paperwork to run for an open congressional seat in New York City, joining a crowded Democratic field.

Conway submitted papers to the Federal Election Commission for New York’s 12th District, a deep blue Manhattan district where Rep. Jerry Nadler, a longtime liberal leader in the U.S. House, is retiring. Conway is considering a run and will have more to say about his plans in early 2026, according a person close to Conway, who confirmed the filing. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

The 12th district Democratic race already includes Jack Schlossberg, a well-known social media personality, former Vogue political correspondent and grandson of John F. Kennedy; New York state assembly members Micah Lasher and Alex Bores; anti-gun violence activist Cameron Kasky; journalist Jami Floyd; and nonprofit group founder Liam Elkind.

Conway is a conservative lawyer and commentator who helped found the anti-Trump Lincoln Project and gained national attention for his criticism of the president. He was once married to Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway; they announced in 2023 that they would divorce, calling the split “amicable.”

George Conway grew highly critical of Trump during the president’s first term — as his wife remained a top adviser to Trump. He branded Trump “Deranged Donald” and questioned whether his actions were constitutional, while Trump declared that “Mr. Kellyanne Conway” was a “stone cold LOSER.”

He vocally opposed Trump in last year’s presidential election, at one point erecting anti-Trump billboards near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Recently he has hosted a podcast with the Bulwark, a center-right news organization founded by Trump critics.

Sarah Longwell, the publisher of the Bulwark, announced in a Dec. 20 video that Conway was moving on to “go do something exciting that will be coming out pretty soon.”

“Either the stupidest thing I’ve ever done or the best thing,” Conway said.
