NY assemblyman doubles down on crude joke about his mom and late Rep. Charlie Rangel

A Manhattan state assemblyman has doubled down on his tasteless joke about his mom being aroused by the late US Rep. Charles Rangel, going off in a private social-media post after being sanctioned over it.

“[SHE] HARDLY SAID ANYTHING POSITIVE ABOUT THE THREE MEN WHO PREGNANTED (sic) HER.. BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT CONGRESSMAN RANGLE THAT MADE HER COO COO FOR COCO POPS!” Democratic Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs wrote in the post made to a private Facebook account after he was sanctioned by his fellow assembly members Friday.

“WE ALL KNOW THAT MY MOMS WAS THE LIFE OF THE PARTY. WHATEVER SHE DID, SHE DID IT WITH PRIDE, AND COULDN’T GIVE ONE DAMN WHO GAVE TWO F–KS!” Gibbs added in the post, which was obtained by City and State.

Gibbs’ outburst came soon after he was sanctioned by the Assembly Ethics and Guidance Committee for “the use of sexually explicit remarks” during a May speech, which the panel said violated assembly policies.

The committee asked Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to “issue a written warning to Member Gibbs and require that Member Gibbs undergo counseling to address the use of sexually explicit remarks and the use of professional communication” — which Heastie agreed to do.

Gibbs, the 57-year-old representative for New York’s 68th District — covering East Harlem and parts of the Upper East Side — raised assembly eyebrows in May while speaking about Rangel, the iconic Harlem native and representative who died two days before, and his predecessor.

“My mother was a big fan of Adam Clayton Powell, the congressmember, and she would tell me often that Adam Powell made her moist, made her moist,” Gibbs said during his off-color speech.

“And then when Charlie won the seat, had the seat, she said Charlie made her wetter. Don’t know what that means, but that’s the way she felt about Charlie,” he said.

Gibbs was one of many people who spoke to commemorate Rangel during the assembly meeting. While the everybody else’s remarks remain on the assembly’s website, the raunchy portion of Gibbs’ speech was removed.

That appeared to enrage Gibbs, who insisted in his social-media posting that he was only ever speaking the way his own mother would have.

“I AM PISSED FOR SEVERAL REASONS,” he wrote. “THEY DELETED THE VIDEO OF MY MOTHER’S QUOTE. I REALLY WANT TO SUE THE STATE FOR THAT. MY MOMS DIDN’T HOLD BACK HER WORDS WHY SHOULD THE STATE?

“IN CLOSING, I AM GOING TO QUOTE MY MOTHER, VALERIE ANN GIBBS ONE ‘MO’ TIME FROM HER GRAVE.., ‘THAT CHARLES RANGEL MAKES ME MOIST’!!! SO THE F–K WHAT?”

It wasn’t Gibbs’ first time courting controversy.

He was arrested in October 2024 when he tried to intervene as the NYPD pulled his brother over for a traffic violation.

Gibbs showed up in the middle of the traffic stop and refused to butt out of the situation, despite cops’ orders. He later owned up to being out of line.

Months earlier, he had been accused of illegally firing a staffer who was in the hospital with a serious medical condition that led to a partial leg amputation.

His career was also preceded by a stint of crime dealing crack cocaine as a teen in the 1980s and a year-long stay in Rikers after he was charged with murder. His charges were reduced to manslaughter, with Gibbs arguing he’d acted in self defense, and he did jail time.

Gibbs became the first member of the state legislature to have served time behind bars when he was elected in 2022.
