How Do You Afford Life in New York City?

The New York Times has been covering the soaring cost of living in New York City and how it has changed the city’s politics and culture over the past year in particular.

Now, we are hoping to speak with a wider group of New Yorkers about how they afford to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

We want to hear how you budget, what you splurge on, how you save for the future, and what makes living here worth it despite the high costs of housing, food, child care and so much else. We want to hear about how these costs have changed your experience living in the city — whether you’ve cut back on going to the movies, moved to a more affordable neighborhood or given up on savings goals.

We hope to hear from as many New Yorkers with as many different incomes and budgets as possible. You certainly don’t have to consider yourself struggling, nor should you worry that you make “too much” for your budgeting to be interesting.

We would love for you to share as many financial details as you’re comfortable with, but at minimum we ask that all participants be willing to share how much money they make in a year.

We will read every response to this questionnaire and reach back out to you if we’re interested in learning more. We won’t publish any part of your response without first following up with you and hearing back. And we won’t share your contact information outside the Times newsroom or use it for any purpose other than to get in touch with you.

Eliza Shapiro reports on New York City for The Times.
