White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s attempt to put out the firestorm over a Vanity Fair interview with Susie Wiles was laughed off on MS NOW on Wednesday morning as co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Jonathan Lemire tore it apart.
The interview with Donald Trump‘s chief of staff, particularly her comments about Trump Cabinet members, set off a flurry of defensive posts from members of the administration praising Wiles as the White House circled the wagons.
Later in the day, Leavitt made herself available to reporters, where she attempted to make the case that the Vanity Fair article was written to make the White House look like a house of chaos.
In the clip shown on Morning Joe, Leavitt complained, “This is, unfortunately, another example of disingenuous reporting, where you have a reporter who took the chief of staff’s words wildly out of context. Many people in this building spoke with that reporter, and those comments were never included in the story, probably because it didn’t push this false narrative of chaos and confusion that the reporter was clearly trying to push.”
That led Brzezinski to retort, “Well, with respect, Jonathan Lemire, I’ll let you take it around. But false narratives and misleading, I mean, that push back sounds ridiculous and preposterous, especially given what Susie Wiles is quoted as saying and apparently recorded as saying, matches what a lot of people close to the president are saying.”
“Yeah, there are a few things here,” Lemire responded. “Her initial response, and it was noted even yesterday morning, is that she claimed she didn’t say the thing about Elon Musk and using ketamine. But the author, Chris Whipple, produced an audiotape recording of the interview, which she clearly did.”
“Beyond that, she didn’t try to actually dispute her quotes,” he added. “She did not suggest they were not accurate, instead fell back on the idea they were taken out of context and the like. But the issue is, I mean, this is an author, she spent an extraordinary amount of time with 11 interviews over the course of a year, some on the phone, some in person, a couple even in the White House Chief of Staff office, just down the hall from the Oval Office. This was not a surprise that this happened.”
