President Donald Trump is on the brink of being abandoned by his own followers, as the very type of person he elevated in politics will not stick around to get his “stink” on them as he goes down, Jesse Edwards, director of Newsweek Voices and Radio, wrote in an analysis published on Tuesday.
Trump “isn’t the worst president in American history. He’s the worst American in American history,” wrote Edwards. “That distinction matters because what’s coming next for him has very little to do with Democrats, policy, or ideology. Trump is going to be taken down by his own people first because that is how this always ends for men like him.”
The wave of MAGA figures speaking out against Trump over his posthumous attack on murdered film director Rob Reiner isn’t an accident, Edwards argued — it’s a sign of his base falling apart and getting ready to head for the hills.
“Trump is not playing the same game as everyone else. He never has,” Edwards wrote. “He is cheating. He is whatever he needs to be in the moment to get more money, more attention and more loyalty. Money is the only thing Trump cares about more than himself, and that includes basic human decency. This is the same man who openly bragged, on tape, about intentionally grabbing women inappropriately because he believed his wealth and status entitled him to do so.”
Unfortunately for him, Edwards continued, Trump is also showing clear signs of age-related decline.
“Compare Trump’s speech today to six years ago and the decline is obvious. The rambling. The confusion. The physical frailty. The constant insistence that nothing is wrong. We have all seen this in our own families. You don’t need to be a doctor to recognize it. And we just went through this with Joe Biden,” wrote Edwards. Worse, he is alienating people who stood with him, one after another, as evidenced by his falling out with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
“It’s only going to accelerate after the 2026 midterms,” Edwards predicted. “Regardless of how Republicans perform, Trump will be more liability than asset the morning after those elections. If Republicans lose, Trump becomes the excuse. If they win, Trump becomes unnecessary. Either way, he is no longer useful, and when Trump is no longer useful, he will be discarded.”
Ultimately, he concluded, “like every man who demands absolute loyalty while offering nothing in return, he will be betrayed first by the people who once called him king.”
