French bulldog puppies stolen at gunpoint during D.C. apartment break-in

Armed intruders stole three French bulldog puppies from a Northeast Washington apartment Sunday evening, D.C. police said.

Officers were called to the 1500 block of Benning Road NE about 7 p.m. Sunday for an armed burglary. A woman told police she opened the door after hearing a knock and three men wearing ski masks forced their way inside, a police report said. Two of them had guns, she told investigators.

According to the police report, she ran into her daughter’s room and one of the men followed her, asking: “Where the bags of weed at?” She responded that they wouldn’t find what they wanted, the police report said, and the men then headed for the cage in the living room. They took the three puppies and fled, the woman told police.

The police report said the puppies are valued at $10,000.

D.C. police offer rewards of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrests and convictions of people responsible for violent crimes.

Authorities in the District and around the country have reported numerous thefts of French bulldogs, which can sell for several thousands of dollars. In November 2023, three were taken at gunpoint as they were being walked near the 5200 block of East Capitol Street SE, according to police. In the summer last year, a woman was walking her French bulldog, Yurman, in Southeast Washington when someone jumped out of a car, waved a gun in her face and grabbed the dog. She later helped police set up a sting operation at a local Papa John’s and recovered Yurman, who was unharmed but exhausted.
