Video shows bystander tackling and disarming Bondi Beach gunman

Video from witnesses taken during the deadly attack Sunday on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach shows a bystander sneaking up behind a gunman, wrestling him to the ground and grabbing his weapon.

In the video, which circulated widely on social media and was verified by The Washington Post, the man can be seen emerging from behind a car and tussling briefly with the shooter before disarming him. The bystander, who was not identified in the video or by authorities, then points the gun at the attacker as he falls to the ground.

It’s unclear who took the video, and authorities have not released information about suspects in the attack that has killed 16 people and injured 40. Officials designated the shooting as a terror attack on the city’s Jewish community. Authorities said that one gunman was killed and a suspected shooter was critically injured. Officials are investigating the possibility of a third gunman, authorities added.

In a news conference Sunday, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called the video “unbelievable” and said the civilian who took down a shooter was a “genuine hero.”

The video shows a gunman, dressed in a black T-shirt and white pants, crawling along the ground before standing up and backing away from the scene. Shots continue to ring out in the background and sirens blare from emergency vehicles.

The video then shows the civilian placing the gun against a tree. Minns said he had “no doubt that there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery.”

. President Donald Trump, condemning the attack Sunday, added that, “it’s been a very, very brave person, actually, who went and attacked frontally one of the shooters and saved a lot of lives.”
