Caps keep Patrick Wellar, replacing Mitch Love on Spencer Carbery’s staff

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — After nearly two months of being a temporary assistant coach for the Washington Capitals, Patrick Wellar can settle in. Wellar isn’t going anywhere, the Capitals announced Wednesday afternoon, and he will remain on Spencer Carbery’s staff permanently.

Wellar joined Washington in September, when the team put Mitch Love on leave amid an investigation into his personal conduct. Love has since been fired and the Capitals have given Wellar the full-time role.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — After nearly two months of being a temporary assistant coach for the Washington Capitals, Patrick Wellar can settle in. Wellar isn’t going anywhere, the Capitals announced Wednesday afternoon, and he will remain on Spencer Carbery’s staff permanently.

Wellar joined Washington in September, when the team put Mitch Love on leave amid an investigation into his personal conduct. Love has since been fired and the Capitals have given Wellar the full-time role.

The 41-year-old Wellar spent the past seven seasons as an assistant for the Hershey Bears, Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate, and has history working with Carbery, who previously ran the Bears’ bench. Wellar works primarily with Washington’s defensemen, and so far this season, the Capitals lead the NHL defensively, allowing a league-low 2.38 goals per game.

“Thrilled for him and his family,” Carbery said. “He’s worked extremely hard for this opportunity. I’ve seen it firsthand and witnessed everything that he’s put in and sacrificed, through the minor leagues, through his time in the American Hockey League in Hershey. He’s earned every bit of the opportunity to be a National Hockey League assistant coach.”
