Trump sics ‘committee of inquiry’ on Lisa Cook after Supreme Court blocks firing

Donald Trump’s ongoing effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is headed for a White House hearing after the Supreme Court blocked the president’s initial attempt to remove her.

Lawyers for the Justice Department and Cook jointly asked a federal judge Friday to put their legal battle on hold while Trump’s newly established “committee of inquiry” investigates allegations against her, Bloomberg reported Friday.

In a filing to U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb, both sides requested a pause in upcoming court deadlines until after the hearing, now scheduled for Dec. 14. They plan to provide another update in early January.

The latest development follows a June Supreme Court ruling that Trump could not, for now, remove Cook without first giving her a meaningful opportunity to defend herself.

Trump first tried to fire Cook in August 2025, citing unproven mortgage fraud allegations that she has denied. After the ruling, he notified her in August that he was again considering her removal.

In an October memorandum establishing the committee, Trump defended his authority to remove officials, including by “firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law.”

The three-member panel is tasked with determining whether there is legal “cause” to dismiss Cook.

Cook and the White House are still working out the “specifics and details” of how the committee will proceed, the lawyers wrote in Friday’s filing, according to Bloomberg.

Cook maintains that the allegations are a pretext for removing her over disagreements about monetary policy, as Trump continues pressing the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.
