Elon Musk spent more than $400 million trying to stop a Democratic wave, and woke up the morning after Election Day to find his money had bought him almost nothing.
The world’s richest man, now the largest individual political donor in modern American history, poured his fortune into Republican Senate and House races through a network of super PACs, but Republicans lost both chambers anyway, reported the Washington Post.
Early Wednesday, Musk lamented the results, posting, “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” and joking that his “election-interfering space lasers” had failed.
He also reposted a warning that congressional investigations could slow SpaceX’s progress, reposted comments that appeared to blame the losses in Texas and Georgia on demographic shifts, and responded to exit polls showing the Iran War weighed heavily on voters with a single word: “Interesting.”
His “Vote red today!” post from Tuesday morning appeared to have been deleted.
The sting was sharpest in Musk’s adopted home state of Texas. In the race’s closing days, he attacked Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, claiming he wanted to “open the borders” and “abolish democracy” and that he “will vote to trans your kids.” Musk sent $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, much of which flowed to a PAC backing Republican Ken Paxton.
Talarico won anyway, and he made sure to call out Musk in his victory speech.
“We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas,” Talarico said. “We just sent a message to every billionaire megadonor, every trillionaire megadonor.”
“Tonight we defeated Goliath,” he added.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who welcomed Musk and his businesses when he fled California, also lost his race.
Democrats have vowed to investigate Musk if they retook Congress, and Musk had warned of political “vengeance.” Days before the election, he pinned a post claiming a Democratic sweep would mean “the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word.”
The midterm spending, which exceeded the roughly $290 million he spent to help elect Trump in 2024, adds to a growing string of political flops for Musk, including the 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court race he claimed “might decide the future of America and Western Civilization.”
