Woke Canadian town embarrassingly apologizes for Harry Potter-themed Halloween display after backlash over JK Rowling’s trans views

A Canadian town apologized over a Harry Potter Halloween display after being called out by trans rights activists – only to be later mocked for caving to woke lefties.

Chiefs in the British Columbia town of Gibsons proclaimed they were “bringing a little Hogwarts magic” to Pioneer Park ahead of Halloween — only to issue a groveling apology for the display after being reminded of JK Rowling’s past commentary on trans issues.

The bronze statue commemorating the town’s founder, George Gibson, wouldn’t have looked out of place in the famed school of wizardry as it was decked out in a Gryffindor robes next to a broom.

Posters labeling Harry Potter as the “Undesirable No. 1” were plastered around the town while the display also featured the Book of Spells.

But what looked like an innocent Halloween display sparked widespread fury online – with much of the irk being directed at Rowling’s well-documented views on trans issues. There were around 200 posts before comments were turned off.

“This is incredibly tone deaf for Gibsons’ trans and gender diverse residents and visitors,” one furious social media user wrote, according to the Daily Hive.

The town was also accused of not “caring about [its] vulnerable communities,” the Western Standard reported.

Officials apologized to “those who felt hurt” by the display – but the apology has been widely ridiculed.

“For heaven’s sake seriously?” one Facebook user wrote. “When did everyone become so hyper sensitive. It’s a Halloween display. Let’s cancel Halloween or anything remotely fun because it might hurt 3 people’s feelings.”

“My goodness sounds like an intense over reaction. Harry Potter is for kids and adults alike. Separate your politics over Rowlings and let imagination be celebrated,” another said.

“Imagine being triggered by a Halloween display of a children’s book lmao,” a third mocked.

Critics also claimed that Canada has turned into an “absolute joke” because of the apology – with mom of two Tracy Johannson-Uchida describing the move as “insanity.”

“What an embarrassment for Town of Gibsons to feel the need to apologize over a Halloween display inspired by Harry Potter! When does this stop?!” the supporter of women and girls’ rights said.

“Another example of adults placing the weight of their own moral judgments on the shoulders of children.

“This is about a book. About imagination, childhood, and celebrating a beautiful, beloved story that has brought joy to millions of children around the world.

“Not every complaint requires an apology, and not everything needs to be interpreted through a lens of offence. Sometimes a Halloween display is just a Halloween display!

“At what point did we decide that avoiding offence was more important than exercising good judgment?

“Get a backbone. It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to respectfully disagree. And it’s okay to stand behind a perfectly reasonable decision rather than apologizing simply because someone takes offence.

“Our children deserve to enjoy the magic of childhood without adults turning everything into a moral controversy.”

The display’s controversy stemmed from Rowling’s 2020 tweet where she wrote, “People who menstrate. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” in response to an article about creating a more equal world post-COVID. She was accused of being transphobic.

She defended her remarks in a 3,600-word essay entitled “J.K. Rowling Writes about Her Reasons for Speaking Out on Sex and Gender issues” which she published in 2020.

She argued that single-sex spaces are necessary for the safety of biological women and girls.

She also argued that being a “woman is not a costume” and accused the UK government of “playing fast and loose with women’s and girls’ safety.”

Rowling spoke up about what she labeled the “new trans activism” –  voicing concern “about the huge explosion in young women wishing to transition and also about the increasing numbers who seem to be detransitioning (returning to their original sex), because they regret taking steps that have, in some cases, altered their bodies irrevocably.”

Rowling has refused to distance herself from her past remarks – revealing her views “haven’t changed.”

She labeled 21st century trans activism as “elitist to its core.”
