Sherrod Brown Regains an Ohio Senate Seat in Crucial Win for Democrats

Sherrod Brown, a former Democratic senator from Ohio, will represent his state again after unseating Senator Jon Husted on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. Mr. Brown’s victory in one of the midterms’ marquee races flips a seat central to the Democrats’ quest to retake control of the Senate.

Mr. Brown, 73, will return to Washington two years after he was defeated by Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio. His comeback reflects just how much the political environment has changed since the Republican Party swept into power in 2024.

It is also a significant blow to President Trump and the Republican Party, which invested more time and resources into this race than all but one other contest during the most expensive election cycle in modern history.

Ohio backed Mr. Trump in all three of his presidential bids, serving as a cornerstone of his political rise.

Mr. Husted was appointed to the Senate in 2025 to finish the term of Mr. Trump’s current vice president, JD Vance. He ran as a business-minded conservative closely aligned with the White House, diverging from other battleground candidates who distanced themselves from the president as his popularity sagged.

Despite the time he had spent as the state’s lieutenant governor, Mr. Husted struggled to introduce himself to voters. Some in the state believed Mr. Brown, a fixture in Ohio politics since the 1970s, was the incumbent in the race.

As much as the results reflected the weaknesses of Mr. Husted and his party, they revealed the strengths of Mr. Brown for this particular political moment.

More comfortable in a fleece than a suit, Mr. Brown has spent the better part of five decades preaching a version of economic populism that calls the system in Washington rigged and frames policy disputes as battles between workers and billionaires.

That proved to be the message that voters, focused on affordability and wary of corruption, wanted to hear.

Mr. Brown ran a campaign respected by even Republican operatives in Ohio. He was early to recognize widespread concern about data centers, and he made Mr. Husted a target by running ads that called out his support of such investments when he served in state government.

His victory marks a triumph not only over Mr. Husted but also over the cryptocurrency industry, whose main super PAC, Fairshake, spent $41 million to help oust Mr. Brown two years ago.

In the current election cycle, Fairshake spent more than $55 million to keep Mr. Brown from returning to office. This time, it was not enough.
