Democratic Gov. Wes Moore wins reelection in Maryland

Maryland election results 2026

Gov. Wes Moore (D) has cruised to reelection in deep-blue Maryland, beating Republican Dan Cox for a second time.

In a rematch of the 2022 race that made him Maryland’s first Black governor and the country’s third Black man elected to lead a state, Moore has won a second term that he has not committed to finishing.

Moore, 48, is widely considered to be mulling a 2028 presidential bid. During a debate last month, he would not commit to serving a full second term, saying instead that he was committed to serving the people of Maryland.

Cox, 52, a former state delegate with a far-right voting record, is aligned with President Donald Trump and campaigned on lowering taxes and more quickly rebuilding the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Moore vastly out-raised Cox, a lawyer whose grassroots comeback campaign never caught traction against an incumbent running in a year that heavily favored Democrats nationwide as President Donald Trump’s approval ratings slid and economic issues topped voter concerns.

What’s at stake

During their lone debate, Moore did not commit to a full second term if reelected, saying instead he was committed to serving the people of Maryland.

Cox, 52, a former state delegate with a far-right voting record, is aligned with President Donald Trump and campaigned on lowering taxes and more quickly rebuilding the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Given that Moore was heavily favored to win reelection, his margin of victory against an opponent he already beat once will help determine how analysts view a 2028 presidential bid, should he decide to run in what’s expected to be a crowded field.
