Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 37-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, defeated her Republican opponent, Diamant Hysenaj, on Tuesday, winning a fifth term in Congress, according to The Associated Press.
Mr. Hysenaj, 44, a real estate developer, never mounted much of a challenge to the congresswoman, raising only $440,000 this election cycle, an amount dwarfed by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s $38 million haul.
So confident was she in her popularity in New York’s 14th Congressional District, encompassing portions of the Bronx and Queens — including segments of the so-called Commie Corridor that helped elect Mayor Zohran Mamdani — that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez spent much of the election season barnstorming elsewhere.
She traveled across New York State campaigning for other Democrats, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, and she crisscrossed the country campaigning for national contenders, too, including Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a Senate candidate in Michigan, and Angie Nixon, a Senate candidate in Florida.
Her backing was more than rhetorical. She donated $300,000 to New York State Democrats and transferred $1 million to the Abdul for Michigan Victory Fund.
Her campaign-season support for other Democrats comes as Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is openly considering a run for president or for the Senate, a decision she has said she will make after the midterms.
“There’s an argument that some make that this is a very unique political window and, oftentimes in politics, you do only get one shot,” she said recently, adding, “life doesn’t wait for you to be ready for things. Sometimes life just makes things ready for you.”
