The FBI’s New Haven, Connecticut, field office pulled its own post Tuesday about the midterms after social media users quickly flagged a glaring error in it.
In an online post that was left up for hours, the FBI office in New Haven told its more than 23,000 followers on X that Election Day was on Wednesday — despite Election Day landing on Tuesday. The post immediately caught the attention of several critics.
“Why the f— is Trump’s FBI telling people that the election is the wrong day?” asked Brian Krassenstein, a prominent liberal influencer, in a post on X to his more than 1 million followers. “PLEASE Vote on Tuesday Nov 3rd. Hold these people accountable.”
By Tuesday morning, the FBI New Haven office’s post remained up, according to Krassenstein.
“It’s been 14 hours and the FBI still hasn’t deleted their tweet claiming that Election Day is Wednesday,” he wrote in a follow-up post.
Independent journalist Ken Klippenstein noted that the FBI New Haven office’s online post was flagged by X’s community fact-checking service and shared screengrabs of the now-deleted post for preservation.
“How is this real lol,” Klippenstein wrote in a post on X to his nearly 570,000 followers.
According to the FBI, it’s a federal election offense for individuals to “try to prevent qualified voters from voting by lying about the time, date, or place of an election (voter suppression).”
The blunder came as the Justice Department planned to send federal monitors to New Haven polling places on Election Day. The city’s Democratic and Republican registrars jointly told the department that monitors would not be allowed inside any polling place.
