Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens faced another round of ridicule Monday after turning to MAGA commentator Scott Jennings to defend her stunning endorsement of a Republican Senate candidate, just hours after a widely criticized CNN interview.
Stevens, who lost Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, shocked her party Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers just two days before the election.
Appearing on Jennings’ show Monday, Stevens insisted she had initially tried to support El-Sayed after losing the primary but was subsequently shut out.
“I tried to do everything right,” Stevens said. “I endorsed him, and the response was, ignored! And cut off!”
She later said the Democrats were “starting to put things forward that are not in sync with the country.”
But the Minnesota Democrat’s appearance on Jennings’ show on the eve of the critical midterms quickly drew another wave of criticism.
“It takes a lot to struggle through a softball Scott Jennings interview, but Haley Stevens is pulling it off,” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X.
Zeteo media columnist Justin Baragona suggested Stevens’ attempts to explain her endorsement were only making matters worse.
“After that disastrous Anderson Cooper interview last night, Haley Stevens has turned to The Free Press and Scott Jennings to try to clean it up,” Baragona posted Monday. “It’s not going well.”
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) offered a sarcastic prediction about Stevens’ political future.
“Next stop, Mar-A-LAGO BABY!!!!” he wrote.
“It’s like they gave her Moron’s questions and she’s got six pre-written answers but forgot to number them,” former MS NOW host Keith Olbermann told his social media followers.
Melanie D’Arrigo, a progressive activist and former New York congressional candidate, offered her own assessment.
“There’s a definite MAGA grift journey that she’s embarking on,” she posted on X.
Journalist Mehdi Hasan summed up the controversy in one word: “Sheesh.”
