Trump renews promise of $5K payout if GOP retains Congress in Midterm eve speech at Lincoln Reflecting Pool

WASHINGTON — President Trump defended his record and attacked Democratic Senate candidates in Alaska and Michigan in his final speech appealing to voters ahead of the midterm elections — though he spent most of his remarks focused on DC construction projects.

Trump celebrated Monday’s steep drop in oil prices, the low unemployment rate, plummeting crime and scant illegal immigration while reviving his pledge to give voters $5,000 apiece if Republicans retain Congress to celebrate what he called the country’s “golden age.”

“The Democrats want to blow all of this up by electing communists and jihadists,” Trump said in an afternoon speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. “We can’t let that happen. We have to keep our Congress strong, free. A little bit of apple pie.”

Trump said he hoped that voters would do “the right thing,” but acknowledged history isn’t on his side.

“For some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms, but we gave this a very strong shot,” he said, noting his 29 rallies across the country.

His closing appeal focused broadly on his national record and narrowly on only two races.

“The Democrat Party has nominated the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history,” Trump said.

“There’s never been anything like what we’re seeing: jihadists and Muslim Brotherhood members and people that nobody can even believe what we’re looking at, and all committed to the same radical agenda: open borders, raising your taxes by trillions of dollars, taking away your guns, transgender mutilation of your children, abolishing oil and natural gas, sending energy costs skyrocketing, and opening the floodgates to millions of migrants.”

The only Democratic candidate that he attacked by name was Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed,who would be the country’s first Muslim senator.

“Abdul El-Sayed qualified for the ballot by campaigning and soliciting signatures at radical mosques [that] called the United States ‘the House of Satan.’ They call it the House of Satan,” Trump said. “We don’t want people that call the United States the House of Satan.”

He also raged against Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s alleged role in recruiting someone with the same name as incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) to appear on the ballot.

“In Alaska, the Democrats conspired to get a fake Dan Sullivan on the ballot to confuse voters and run against the real Dan Sullivan,” he said.

Trump discussed the election about 24 minutes into his remarks that outlined his plans to renovate or build various DC landmarks.

“We have a lot of great things planned for Washington, and I could get into the nation, but for that you don’t have enough time,” he said.
