Martha Stewart’s apology for homeless Halloween costume eviscerated as lifestyle guru’s Instagram is flooded with hate

Martha Stewart’s Instagram followers aren’t buying her apology.

“Pose” star Indya Moore and more social media users took issue with the lifestyle guru’s claim that she dressed an an unhoused person on Halloween to “bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness.”

Stewart may have deleted photos of her costume, complete with ripped-up clothes, dirt on her face and a cardbord sign — but that didn’t stop Moore, 31, from leaving a scathing comment under a post about the multimillionaire’s Sunday statement to Page Six.

“A rich woman dressing up as a hungry, homeless person brings more awareness to how out of touch and apathetic wealth makes people than it does motivate people to empathize and activate,” the 31-year-old wrote.

“If you were serious about poverty, you’d use your platform to back policies that tax the rich, put free food in front of people who are hungry and homeless and provide free healthcare and education,” she continued.

Moore insisted Stewart’s “excuse is not believable” and dubbed the apology a “manipulative counterattack.”

She explained, “Most of the people following you are not wealthy. They are far closer to poverty than you are. So when they question the intentions of a wealthy white woman wearing poverty as a costume, that is a fair question. Flipping it back on them is passive-aggressive and insulting.”

Moore noted that “an apology that ends in an interrogation of people you offended isn’t an apology,” blasting Stewart for turning “a question about [her] judgment into an inquiry of [her] followers’ loyalty.”

Stewart released her initial apology over the weekend, only to delete it and share a second via Instagram hours later.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” it read. “My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”

Some Instagram users applauded Stewart’s words, insisting the costume was “no big deal” in the first place.

Many, however, condemned her “highlighted, un-cropped screenshot app apology.”

One wrote, “The only thing that this brought awareness to was how disconnected wealthy people are from the majority of the population.”

Others urged Stewart to go out and “make a real difference.”

Some questioned her team members, asking, “So when this costume concept was in the works, no one said, ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea?’”

It was not just Stewart’s personal Instagram account that came under attack — but also her official branded account, which was flooded with additional comments blasting the lifestyle guru’s costume and subsequent apology.

After sharing a post about paint trends, Stewart’s brand found itself inundated with critical comments, including one that read, “No bye you’re so tone deaf.”

Another added: “But you didn’t bring attention to the issue of homelessness. Aside from your ridiculous costume in the post, you were shilling your crappy HSN candles in the caption. So again, all about you and your wallet. Get lost.”
