Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) let out a snippet of his impersonation of President Donald Trump during his brief rally speech in Iowa on Sunday.
Johnson traveled with Trump to Dubuque, Iowa, to rally for Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), who is running against Democratic challenger Josh Turek in the state’s Senate race. It was the 28th rally Trump has held for Republicans over the last month, even though some GOP candidates have publicly distanced themselves from the president because of his sinking approval rating.
Johnson briefly spoke to the crowd during the rally, where he told them about Trump’s work ethic and what it’s like to get a call from the president at 1:00 a.m. Johnson’s Trump impersonation slipped out during the bit.
“I work almost as hard as this guy. I try to keep up with him, [but] he doesn’t sleep at all,” Johnson said.
“The man calls me at one o’clock in the morning, and also at 5:00 a.m.,” Johnson said before slipping into his Trump voice. “‘Mikey, are you sleeping? No sir, of course not. Sleep is for sissies.”
“‘What’s on your mind, Mr. President?’” Johnson continued, before adding in his Trump voice, “‘I don’t know, let’s talk about whatever.’”
Johnson then snapped out of the routine.
“I’m not going to do my impression in front of you,” he said, turning to Trump, who was standing behind him. “Sorry, I didn’t plan that.”
