President Donald Trump’s plan to break ground on his triumphal arch within days just ran into a fresh legal roadblock.
The District of Columbia and Virginia sued Saturday to halt the construction of the 250-foot arch, The Washington Post reported. Their lawsuit calls the project “flagrantly unlawful,” with D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb warning of “serious, immediate and irreparable harm” to the District and Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones blasting it as “Trump’s illegal vanity project.”
Officials have said work could begin as soon as Nov. 5 if federal planners sign off. The two jurisdictions argue they have clear standing, a hurdle that sank a challenge to Trump’s White House ballroom in a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling this summer, because the arch would snarl traffic, weaken emergency preparedness and nearly double the capital’s 130-foot height cap. Their lawyers also urged the court to act before the administration can claim it’s too late to stop a project already underway, calling that tactic a “cynical gambit.”
