President Donald Trump stumbled through a riff about his sisters at a Florida rally Friday night, and critics seized on the moment as more evidence that something is off.
Speaking in Daytona Beach, Trump was attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and repeating his claim that she married her brother. He then turned to his own family.
“I did not marry my sister!” Trump said. What came next was hard to make out.
Acyn Torabi, senior digital editor at MeidasTouch, transcribed it as: “Lovely. I have two LEHHRR — two lovely uhhh — I have one left.” The account FactPost heard it slightly differently: “Lobely — I have two luhlaaa — I have two lovely.”
Trump had two sisters. Maryanne Trump Barry, a retired federal appeals judge, died in 2023. Elizabeth Trump Grau is still living.
Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch News and a former federal prosecutor, called it “another cognitive glitch that will never be shown on any network news show.”
Paul Gundlach, a retired advertising executive who worked at Young & Rubicam and holds a Wharton MBA, said he couldn’t believe Trump’s team keeps putting him out there.
“It is astonishing that Donald Trump thinks this is helping promote his capabilities and his party,” Gundlach wrote, “and equally astonishing that not a single Democrat has said out loud that he has lost it completely.”
The moment came days after Trump snapped at a reporter who asked whether he’d skipped a trip to Kansas because he was “sick of travel.”
“I feel perfect,” Trump said at the time.
Trump, 80, is the oldest person ever elected president. The White House has repeatedly said he is in excellent health.
