‘I’m probably done for’: Candidate live-posts what he calls police pursuit

A Libertarian candidate for state Senate in North Carolina has been posting on X about what he describes as a police pursuit on Monday, hours after he wrote that he planned to end his life.

“I have decided I no longer wish to live,” Jonathan D. Miller, who is running for Senate District 16 in Wake County, posted Sunday evening. “Do not contact me. I do not want to talk.”

“The whole police department is chasing me with guns drawn,” Miller posted Monday morning. In a follow-up, he wrote, “I’ve got six shots and the high ground. I hope they don’t find me, but if they do it’s going to be a hell of a show.”

Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, urged him to stop: “Stop what you are doing and announce where you are and drop the gun. Please stop. Folks want you to live.”

“I don’t think they pursued me very far,” Miller replied. “I stopped looking back for a while once I hit the tree line. They should have caught up to me by now but they haven’t, so I’m guessing they’re standing guard by my apartment. I’m never going back there so that doesn’t really matter.”

Hours later, he posted that a “hostage negotiator type dude” had called him: “While I was distracted talking with him on the phone they were moving in around me. Luckily I spotted one of them and took off.”

In his most recent post, just after 2 p.m. ET, he wrote that “they” had managed to “box me in” and had dogs.

No law enforcement agency has publicly confirmed a pursuit.

Miller is running against incumbent Democratic state Sen. Gale Adcock and Republican Philip Hensley, according to the Libertarian Party’s website and Ballot Brief.
