Hitler’s infamous Nazi ‘Eagle’s Nest’ retreat set ablaze in suspected arson

Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” was set ablaze Thursday night after an arsonist torched the infamous mountaintop retreat, authorities said.

Responders first reached the site around 9:52 p.m. to find flames ravaging the notorious tourist landmark, according to Der Spiegel.

More than 200 emergency personnel rushed to the scene, where they arrested an unidentified person of interest.

A major fire engulfs the Kehlsteinhaus mountaintop building in Bavaria, Germany.

Police in southern Bavaria later confirmed that a fire broke out at the Eagle’s Nest, which is referred to locally as Kehlsteinhaus.

The perch — which sits at 1,834 meters above sea level — was used by high-ranking Nazi officials during World War II, though Hitler himself visited it only a handful of times.

Eagle’s Nest was constructed in 1938 and to reach the summit, visitors have to ride in a brass elevator inside the rock.

Because the structure sits in such an isolated elevation only accessible by brass elevator or specialized mountain roads, logistics and water transport were extremely difficult, according to Upday News Germany.

Unlike many of the buildings in Obersalzberg, a prominent resort community, the Eagle’s Nest sustained no damage during Allied bombing campaigns.

It was not initially clear if the historic building was entirely destroyed, according to OE24.

The fire remains under criminal probe.
