Palmer Luckey Says He’s Breeding Genetically Enhanced Dogs for the Military

Try to imagine the most dystopian military startup you can think of, and there’s a good chance it already has a billion-dollar valuation in Texas.

Palmer Luckey’s Warhound is a perfect case-in-point. Along with cofounder Ben Lamm, the billionaire arms maker has been plugging away at a startup promising to “produce genetically enhanced working dogs” for use on the battlefield.

According to the Financial Times, Warhound quietly launched 18 months ago, and has already raised $200 million from major tech investors like Sequoia Capital, giving it a valuation of $1.2 billion. Even the CIA’s venture capital firm In-Q-Tel is reportedly involved, making what should be a schlocky sci-fi premise a deadly serious reality.

As Lamm described it to the FT, Warhound is meant to be a “Captain America program for dogs [which] also solves a real problem in the welfare of these animals.”

Beyond the bottomless moral pit that is a for-profit combat dog breeding company, Luckey hardly seems like the right guy for the job. Cofounder of the weapons-tech company Anduril Industries — and before that the virtual reality headset company Oculus Rift — the military-industrial billionaire has a dogged history with defense deliverables, pun somewhat intended.

His autonomous suicide drones, for example, experienced a series of embarrassing failures on the front lines of Ukraine. Not only did Luckey’s insidious loitering munitions fail to hit targets accurately, but they could hardly stay in the air, with a number of drones crashing to the ground during routine operations. Anduril’s suicide drone platform was so unreliable that the Ukrainian military completely abandoned it in 2024, and evidently hasn’t looked back.

Then in summer of 2025, Anduril’s anti-drone quadcopter “Anvil” reportedly crashed in the deep woods of Oregon, sparking a 22-acre wildfire. The company’s surveillance drone platform “Altius” suffered two catastrophic failures in launch testing by the US Air Force. Over a dozen naval drone ships — infused with Anduril’s “Lattice” software — completely bricked during a live Navy drill late last year.

Most recently, one of Anduril’s “Dive-LD” submarine drones went “dead in the water for more than a day,” as US Central Command Captain Tim Hawkins put it to DefenseScoop, allowing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to seize the vessel.

The list of operational failures could go on. The point is that, for all his money and bloodthirsty ambition, Luckey is probably the last guy you want overseeing your high-school robotics team — let alone a first-of-its-kind biotech company dedicated to breeding mutant wardogs.

The fact that investors have inflated Warhound to a $1.2 billion valuation anyway tells you just about everything you need to know about the state of the US economy, not to mention the ridiculously lucrative grift that is the US military industrial complex.
