A fast-rising favorite of President Donald Trump is facing a growing revolt from some of the most hardline Republicans in his own party.
Several House Freedom Caucus members have privately questioned whether Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) still belongs in the group, Axios reported Thursday. Four sources told the outlet that members have informally discussed kicking out the 32-year-old freshman, though the matter hasn’t come up at a formal caucus meeting.
The caucus is “livid” at Gill, one member told Axios. Another member argued that Gill treats his membership as little more than a credential. “He’s not really in the Freedom Caucus. He’s just using it for conservative bonafides,” the member said.
Critics in the group say Gill’s involvement has dropped off as his national profile has climbed. They also say he benefited from introductions to caucus donors without doing enough to help colleagues in tough races.
“For those of us who have been in meetings, who have been in the tough votes over the last two years, he’s been M.I.A.,” one member said, adding that Gill is “totally looking for the ladder climbing.”
Gill’s office pushed back, noting that he has donated to more than a dozen caucus members’ campaigns. A spokesperson said Gill is “laser-focused on getting out the vote and ensuring Republicans hold the majority this November.”
GOP leadership has embraced him. Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) told Axios that “Brandon is the future of our party, and his communication skills are phenomenal.”
The resentment extends to Gill’s bid to become the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee. Some colleagues questioned whether viral hearing moments qualify him for the job.
“He’s kind of skipping a few steps here, and he doesn’t necessarily have the credentials to do it,” one House Republican said. Another lawmaker said Gill stopped answering texts as his fame grew.
Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-MD) accused the press of “ginning up stories” and insisted the group remains “united.” Rep. Mark Harris (R-NC) also defended Gill. “He comes to meetings,” he said.
The caucus has expelled members before, ousting Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2023 and Ken Buck in 2024.
“He’s already kind of left the Freedom Caucus,” one member said. “The only question is whether you formalize it or you don’t.”
