After ‘GMA’ Hosts’ Scandal, Their Exes Are Engaged

A month after Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, the former anchors of “GMA3” — the afternoon spinoff of “Good Morning America” — were married, their former spouses, Andrew Shue and Marilee Fiebig, have announced their engagement.

Shue, the “Melrose Place” actor who was married to Robach, confirmed the news in an interview with People magazine published on Wednesday. “We’re very grateful and happy,” he said. “I don’t know how it happened, but there’s a happy ending.”

Fiebig, 49, and Shue, 59, did not respond to requests for comment. The pair first struck up a friendship in 2022, as the relationship between their spouses became one of the most talked about scandals in morning television. Their friendship eventually turned romantic.

“You don’t know how you meet the person who’s right for you,” Shue told People. “It just happened.” He described the circumstances that brought them together as “freak luck.”

The engagement is the latest twist in a saga that began in November 2022, when The Daily Mail published photographs of Robach and Holmes holding hands. Both were legally married to other people at the time. The photographs ignited a tabloid frenzy, fueling an apparently inexhaustible appetite for details and speculation about whether the anchors had been having an affair with each other.

Robach and Holmes said they had separated from their spouses in August, before their relationship began, but they had not yet told the network. “They were waiting until they both were divorced,” Matthew Hiltzik, a spokesman for the pair, told The New York Times in December 2022. ABC initially said the relationship did not violate company policy, but temporarily removed them from the air, describing the situation as an “internal and external distraction.” In January 2023, ABC announced that the pair would leave the network, bringing an end to a nearly two-month workplace and tabloid spectacle.

Robach and Holmes did not retreat from public life for long. At the end of 2023, they launched the iHeart podcast “Amy & T.J.,” in which they discussed their relationship and the scrutiny surrounding it. The show gave them a way to narrate a story that had largely been told by tabloids and commentators. They described the public reaction and the loss of their jobs as deeply painful, while defending their account of the relationship’s timeline. In October 2025, they announced their engagement on the podcast.

“We wanted to let you all know before anybody was able to,” Holmes said of the engagement. “We learned that lesson, I guess, in the past about our relationship: We want to be the first to talk about it.”

According to marriage records filed last week, Robach and Holmes were married in a private ceremony in Arkansas, in September.

Shue and Fiebig’s relationship developed in the shadow of that public drama. Their connection, Shue told People, emerged during a period when they could “share ourselves with each other in a time where we both needed a friend.”

There are few precedents for this particular romantic arrangement, a kind of betrayal-to-betrothal, with Shania Twain as perhaps the most famous example. In 2008, after 14 years of marriage, the Canadian singer separated from her husband, the producer Robert Lange, more commonly referred to as “Mutt,” amid his affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Twain and Lange divorced in 2010. The following year, Twain married Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne’s former husband. The two had supported each other through the collapse of their respective marriages.

“After we were both thrown off the same cliff together, we sort of grabbed each other midair, and it broke the fall,” Twain later said.

The engagement of Fiebig and Shue does not definitively settle the question of what happened in 2022, nor does it erase the professional and personal fallout. Instead, it gives the people left behind a romantic narrative of their own. There is something unusually cathartic about this twist: The supposed casualties of a scandal, who had little control over how their private lives became public property, have found a future together.
