A popular restaurant along the Russian River in Duncan Mills has closed its doors indefinitely following a fatal high-speed crash that took the life of its beloved owner.
Tom O’Bryan, owner of the Blue Heron, died in a fiery car accident early Monday morning on westbound State Route 116 at Redwood Drive, west of Guerneville, the California Highway Patrol said.
He was traveling with two other passengers in a Mercedes around 12:17 a.m. on October 19 when he lost control of the car, veered off the roadway and slammed into a rock and a tree, authorities said.

The violent impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, and emergency responders found O’Bryan deceased inside the wreckage.
“Two adult male passengers sustained major injuries but were able to exit the vehicle. They were transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment,” the CHP said.
The Blue Heron restaurant announced Tuesday that it would remain closed until further notice.
“We are absolutely devastated by Tom’s loss in this tragic accident and our thoughts are with those that were injured. Our family needs time to grapple with his loss, but we know he wouldn’t want life to stop blooming with his departure,” the restaurant posted.
The family added that “The Blue will be back in time.”
The news quickly spread through the Russian River community. Local organizations, close friends, and longtime patrons remembered the restaurant owner fondly.

“Our Lower Russian River community suffered an enormous loss this week,” the Russian River Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “An absolute beacon of joy, Tom created a place where so many of us have shared stories, food and laughter.”
O’Bryan’s friend, Jim Raidl, remembered his unfailing willingness to step up for those around him. “Tom was always there for me when I needed a special favor and was always ready to help in a time of need,” Raidl shared in a social media post.
“He was a significant part of our Duncans Mills Village community, and he will be sorely missed,” he added.

Local community member Barbara Walker saidthat whether people were regulars or annual visitors stopping by during rodeo weekend, “the Blue just had that special feeling that we all gravitated towards.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Santa Rosa CHP, including whether alcohol was a contributing factor.
