It took some people by surprise: Wait, what is the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Gala, and how is it that (almost) everyone on the red carpet looks this good?
Though still relatively young — the event is only in its sixth year — the annual gathering to raise funds for one of Los Angeles’s newest museums has established itself as an occasion for elegance and glamour. This Saturday’s edition showed just how many ways there are to interpret that spirit: Almost no silhouette crossed the carpet twice.
And while there were plenty of understated jewel tones and a fair amount of black and white, some of the standout looks of the night were those that made bold bets on color. We’re thinking of Tracee Ellis Ross’s tangerine dream of a dress, Sabrina Carpenter in royal blue and Naomi Ackie in one of the unexpected colors of the moment, platonic purple — the sort you would see on the color wheel in art class.
A few other looks caught our eye, too. Here are some highlights.
Greta Lee
This icy Dior dress is like if a Van Gogh painting got freezer burn, and it works.
Naomi Ackie
Who knew a gown with this much drama could feel so casual at the same time? The pockets help.
Alexander Skarsgard
Over the past year or so, the actor has sported some of the most daring looks for men on the red carpet, but we like that this one by Balenciaga, while by no means safe, is more about style than shock value.
Sabrina Carpenter
Armani helped her find her color.
ASAP Rocky
This custom Gucci suit is opulent and gorgeous, but the studded brooch and bejeweled clutch — which more men should consider accessorizing with — give the look an extra lift.
Tracee Ellis Ross
Part of why this color works so well is because of the incredible texture of this one-shoulder Balenciaga dress, which resembles seaweed. The minimal makeup, barely-there shoe and slight earrings show the careful hand of a stylist who knows she doesn’t need much else.
Diego Calva
There’s no reason a highlighter-yellow shirt — and matching tie! — should look good with a black tux. In fact, we’d ordinarily warn against it. But the cut and contrast of this Loewe look gave us something to think about.
Grace Gummer
This Dior dress has the feel of an heirloom, but the high hemline and unexpected trimmings make it fresh.
Teyana Taylor
In Schiaparelli, she brought one of the more avant-garde looks to this red carpet. We like how the delicate ombré flowers in the skirt balance out the hardness of the bodice.
Miyako Bellizzi
The costume designer made a case for all the Matthieu Blazy-mania with this Chanel dress that nods at the label’s signature tweed, but in festive sequins. We particularly love the collar, which is like a built-in statement necklace.
