A tractor-trailer carrying about 120 head of cattle through Kansas City, Mo., collided with a car early Sunday, fell off an interstate-highway overpass onto another car and spilled out dozens of animals, officials said. Some roamed through downtown in the pre-dawn hours.
The crash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on the westbound Interstate 70 curve over the southbound lanes of Interstate 35, according to patrol officers who discovered it. The lower highway remained closed through the early afternoon, the police said.
The truck driver and the driver of the car that was on the lower road were reported to be in stable condition on Sunday afternoon, said Michael Hopkins, a battalion chief with the Kansas City, Mo., fire department.
The impact of the crash tore open the multilevel livestock trailer, filled with young cattle, killing 45 to 60 instantly and trapping others, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City, Mo., police department.
Dozens of surviving cattle escaped onto the highway and wandered into surrounding neighborhoods. By midmorning, sightings were reported as far away as Kansas City, Kan., across the Kansas River.
Officials called livestock handlers to help wrangle the roaming cattle, and all the livestock were found by the early afternoon, Sergeant DiMartino said.
