President Donald Trump was called out by political observers Thursday evening over his attempt to downplay a humiliating defeat in Indiana on Thurdsay.
Indiana’s Republican-controlled Senate rejected a controversial redistricting proposal backed by Trump in a stunning 31-19 vote. The sharp rebuke came despite Republicans holding a 40-10 majority.
The proposed map aimed to eliminate two Democratic-held congressional districts and consolidate GOP control over all nine Indiana seats. Trump had pressured state lawmakers for months, with Vice President JD Vance repeatedly visiting the state. The rejection dealt Trump a significant political setback and marked a rare rebuke from Republicans despite threats of primary challenges against dissident lawmakers and swatting incidents targeting opposing senators.
When asked about the rejection, Trump downplayed the defeat.
“Well we won every other state. That’s the only state — it’s funny because I won Indiana all three times by a landslide,” Trump began.
Social media observers called out the president over his next assertion.
“I wasn’t working on it very hard,” said Trump. “Would’ve been nice. Would’ve picked up two seats if we did that.”
