Ex-Dallas cop Amber Guyger is sprung from prison after mistakenly shooting her neighbor

Amber Guyger, the ex-Dallas cop who murdered her neighbor in his own homeafter she accidentally walked into the wrong apartment in 2018, was released from a Texas prison Friday on parole.

Guyger, 38, strolled out of the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville after serving seven of her 10-year sentence, NBC News reported, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The convicted killer will spend the rest of her sentence outside in the community, according to the department.

The former cop, who is white, was found guilty by a jury in October 2019 for fatally shooting Botham Jean — her 26-year-old unarmed black neighbor — after mistakenly entering his apartment.

Jean’s family was annoyed with Guyger’s early prison release — but had long been enraged by the light sentence, according to an attorney for the family.

“We were opposed to her early release because we wanted her to at least do a maximum amount of time, the full 100%,” attorney Lee Merritt told NBC Friday.

“But we realized that that was not always something that we were not guaranteed so it’s frustrating. But for the family, the frustration came at the point where she was sentenced to [just] 10 years, not just the release today.”

Guyger already had a place to live and work lined up prior to her release, one of her trial attorneys Robert L. Rogers told WFAA-TV last month.

“She’s been remorseful. She’s stayed remorseful. She’s still remorseful,” Rogers said.

A four-year member of the Dallas PD, Guyger returned home after 15-hour shift on the night of Sept. 6, 2018.

The cop, who lived one floor below Jean, testified that she parked on the wrong floor and accidentally walked into his apartment.

Jean, who worked as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, was watching television in his living room at the time when, WFAA-TV reported, based on information from prosecutors.

Guyger said she tried to use her key but the apartment door pushed open. Once she saw Jean, she began fearing for her life and thought he was a burglar — before she pulled out her weapon and gunned him down.

She was off-duty but in uniform at the time of the shooting and was fired from the police force.

The jury found Guyger guilty of murder after deliberating for less than a day.

Her freedom comes around two weeks after the Texas parole board approved her release on Oct. 1 — despite being previously denied parole in September 2024, NBC reported.

“The Dallas Police Department understands this decision may bring renewed attention and emotion surrounding the tragic death of Botham Jean,” Dallas police said in a statement on Oct. 1.

“Our thoughts remain with the Jean family and all those impacted by his loss.”

At the time Guyger’s parole was granted, Jean’s family released a statement through their attorney that said: “Releasing Ms Guyger after seven years makes that loss feel even smaller in the eyes of the system. It is not smaller.”

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
