Conservative political analyst Jonah Goldberg raised concerns Thursday about new White House press secretary Katie Zacharia’s decision to defend her disputed legal credentials in an interview with a far-right conspiracy theorist.
Appearing on CNN’s “The Arena with Kasie Hunt,” Goldberg questioned why Zacharia turned to right-wing commentator Jack Posobiec to explain her previous claims about being a lawyer.
“It’s not a good sign that the person that she went to,” Goldberg began, “which a lot of people in this administration go to, was Jack Posobiec.”
Hunt jumped in to discuss Posobiec’s history of promoting conspiracy theories, before Goldberg delivered a warning about Zacharia’s ability to withstand an interview with independent journalists.
“The idea that she has to go to this guy, where she knows his mission is to not ask a hard question — because he is essentially part of the administration, for all intents and purposes, and on the sort of wacky wing of it — is a sign that we still don’t know how she’s going to do in a real interview with an actual journalist,” Goldberg said.
“And that would make me nervous too.”
Hunt subsequently played a clip of Zacharia defending herself against accusations that she misrepresented herself as an attorney.
“It’s unfortunate that people dub this as some sort of conspiracy or want to put me in a camp,” Zacharia said.
But Goldberg wasn’t convinced by her explanation.
“She wasn’t careful about how she characterized herself, and Posobiec clearly didn’t have any follow-up questions about it,” he said.
