At least two people were shot on Thursday at an elementary school in Oregon and the shooter is dead, the authorities said.
Dispatchers were called at about 1 p.m. to Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., for a report of gunshots fired into a car, Sheila Miller, a spokeswoman for the Bend Police Department, told local reporters in streamed remarks.
Officers with the Bend Police Department arrived at the school within minutes, Ms. Miller said. The suspect, who was not identified, was killed. It was not immediately clear who shot the suspect, she added.
There were “multiple victims,” she said, and two people were taken to a hospital. Children were among the injured, she said, but did not elaborate. “This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend,” she said, her voice breaking. “It’s devastating.”
A representative with the hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ms. Miller said she was unaware of the victims’ status.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from agencies across central Oregon responded to the elementary school, Ms. Miller said. The officers went room by room to help evacuate the students and teachers. The school has about an enrollment of about 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. About 40 people work at the school, Ms. Miller said.
