Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro answered a student’s question about Judaism at a Turning Point USA event. Clips of his answer have since set off a wave of antisemitic attacks from the far right, with some on the MAGA fringe accusing him of trying to impose Jewish law on Christians.
Shapiro, the co-founder of The Daily Wire, was speaking at a stop on TPUSA’s “America: Love It or Leave It” tour. A young man in a “Jesus is King” shirt asked him about faith. Shapiro explained that Judaism doesn’t require non-Jews to convert, and said that in Jewish tradition, non-Jews are only expected to follow a short list of moral rules.
“If you’re not Jewish, all you have to do is fulfill seven basic rules, they’re called the Noahide Laws,” Shapiro said.
The Noahide Laws come from the Talmud. They forbid idolatry, blasphemy, murder, sexual immorality, theft and eating flesh torn from a living animal, and they call for establishing courts of justice. In Judaism, they mark what’s expected of a righteous non-Jew. On the far right, they’ve long been the basis of an antisemitic conspiracy theory claiming Jews secretly plan to force the laws on Christians and punish those who refuse.
Chris Menahan, who runs the far-right site Information Liberation, posted the clip under the caption “Ben Shapiro urges TPUSA crowd to abide by the Noahide Laws.” The post racked up more than 70,000 views. Menahan followed with more clips, including one where Shapiro said, “I’m a Jew. Definitionally, this means I do not believe that Jesus is divine.”
“Judaism, unlike Christianity or most other major world religions, does not encourage people to convert to it,” Shapiro said in that clip. “In fact, in Judaism, you’re supposed to actively discourage people from becoming Jewish.”
In another clip, Shapiro defended Judaism’s opposition to interfaith marriage, saying it “tends to end with full-scale assimilation of Jews.” He added, “It’s very weird when I do these things and we get into abstruse discussions of Talmudic law.”
The backlash came fast.
“Why is Ben Shapiro lecturing a TPUSA crowd about the Noahide Laws?” X user Grace Chong of Bannon’s WarRoom wrote. “Christians follow Christ. We don’t need Ben Shapiro telling us which Jewish religious laws we’re supposed to follow.”
Mark Mitchell, head pollster at Rasmussen Reports, took a swipe too. “Ben teaches a (likely largely Christian) TPUSA audience about the Noahide laws,” he wrote. “But why did he leave out the one about idolatry? Awkward.”
From there, things got uglier.
“Did not I warn you these jews would push Noahide laws?!” wrote an account called Virginia Buckskin, whose bio boasts of “1607 Pioneer Stock.” “Them and their Muslim bioweapons must go.”
Comedian Tommy Borum claimed Shapiro told “Christians and Jews alike they must follow NOAHIDE LAW to get into Heaven,” and warned, “you’ll be hearing a lot more about NOAHIDE LAW in the future as they attempt total domination.” Another account mocked the group as “TPJEWSA.”
The QAnon influencer known as SGAnon went further. In a long post, he called Shapiro “Ben ‘Traitor’ Shapiro” and claimed Shapiro had told a Christian crowd “they are not allowed to worship Jesus Christ.” He followed that with false claims blaming Jews for the death of Jesus.
Shapiro didn’t say anything of the kind. In the clips, he describes Jewish beliefs and says Jews don’t believe non-Jews need to convert.
The blowup is the latest sign of the fight over antisemitism tearing through TPUSA’s corner of the right, where Shapiro has been a frequent target of figures like Candace Owens and Nick Fuentes.
