At least two people were killed by falling trees during Hurricane Isaias, which unleashed powerful winds and heavy rain as it churned through the Florida Panhandle and into Alabama, officials said on Saturday.
The sheriff’s office in Escambia County, Fla., which includes Pensacola, said a woman was killed when a toppled tree fell on her home. Similarly, in Birmingham, Ala., a tree that crashed down on a house killed a person, according to Jim Coker, director of emergency management in Jefferson County.
The authorities have not released additional details about the deaths.
Jason Beaman, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Mobile, Ala., said trees have fallen on several homes but the scope of damage remained unclear. Crews were venturing out on Saturday morning to get a fuller assessment.
In Dale County, Ala., about 180 miles east of Mobile, the sheriff’s office warned overnight that deputies were responding to deteriorating road conditions, which had caused multiple “vehicle crashes involving collisions with trees.” A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office there said on Saturday morning that there were no reports of fatalities.
