Two pedestrians died and a third is in critical condition after a driver plowed a sedan through a bustling intersection in the Bronx striking multiple vehicles, according to the Police Department.
The five-car wreck took place at the intersection of Allerton Avenue and Holland Avenue around 2:15 p.m., the police said. The driver, an 81-year-old man, failed to stop his car when he was approaching the intersection and hit two cars, which then rammed into two other vehicles, the police added.
Surveillance footage from the scene shows the car, a white Mercedes-Benz, driving through an intersection and ramming into two stopped cars in the opposite lane of traffic, according to video obtained by News 12.
Valenzuela Rodríguez, 60, the owner of Empanadas Monumental, saw the wreck from outside of his store on Allerton Avenue. The Mercedes was initially traveling in the correct lane, Mr. Rodríguez said, and it appeared to be slowing before it lost control.
“It looked like he was trying to slow down at first, but then he crossed the lane, and he took three pedestrians with him, and he crushed the people between the cars,” Mr. Rodríguez said, speaking in Spanish. “It was so awful. We could hear the crash — it sounded like a bomb exploding.”
The pedestrians were hit between the cars and were found unresponsive with wounds to the head and body, according to the police.
Three pedestrians were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, a hospital in Morris Park, in critical condition, where two of them died. The third pedestrian, a woman, was undergoing surgery Friday evening, according to the police.
Six occupants of the vehicles, including the 81-year-old driver, were also taken to the hospital in stable condition, the police said.
The accident is under investigation, and no arrests have been made, the police said.
