‘Too bad!’ Trump twists knife as his government launches probe of Kimberly Guilfoyle

President Donald Trump said “Too bad!” when asked about Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, his son’s former fiancée, whom his own administration’s watchdog is now investigating.

Trump spoke to reporters outside the White House on Friday as he prepared to depart on Marine One with boxer Mike Tyson.

The State Department’s Office of the Inspector General, the department’s internal watchdog, is investigating Guilfoyle and the U.S. Embassy in Greece, two people familiar with the decision told NBC News.

“Have you heard about some of these reports about Kimberly Guilfoyle, your ambassador to Greece?” a reporter asked.

“I’ve just heard about it,” Trump replied. “Too bad! I mean, I don’t know.”

“She’s an ambassador. I just heard a little bit about it. I don’t know too much, but she was always very nice,” he continued.

“I think you heard about the oil deal with Russia,” Trump said, changing the subject. “That is a big deal. That is massive amounts of oil coming into our country, and I wanna thank President [Vladimir] Putin, to be honest with you.”

“… it’s diesel, which is what we want. So thank you,” the president added.

The investigation comes as Eric Deters, a legal consultant and longtime Trump supporter and donor, has accused Guilfoyle of asking him to pay her outstanding $100,000 American Express bill before her 2025 confirmation hearing in exchange for access to senior administration officials, NBC News reported.

“She was so desperate for that $100,000. It was a quid pro quo,” Deters told NBC News in an interview Thursday.

Deters gave NBC News messages that were first reported Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, including one that appears to show Guilfoyle telling him to wire the money directly to American Express because “it won’t show up anywhere” that way. He said he did not pay her.

An attorney for Guilfoyle told the Journal that she disputed the authenticity of the messages but did not provide specifics, according to NBC News.

Federal law bars the secretary of state from stopping the watchdog’s investigation of Guilfoyle, but it allows Trump to fire the inspector general who runs it, according to the Inspector General Act.

In his first term, Trump fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick in May 2020 after then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recommended it, CBS News reported. On Jan. 24, 2025, four days into his second term, Trump fired the department’s inspector general, along with 17 other watchdogs, according to NBC News.
