Cyclist killed in Central Park dog mishap was well-liked UWS biking enthusiast

A 71-year-old Manhattan man who was thrown to his death when his bicycle slammed into a Golden Retriever was a well-liked Upper West Side biking enthusiast, a neighbor said.

“He was very active on his bike,” Charlie, resident manager at West 89 Street building where Douglas Adams lived before the fatal mishap, told The Post Wednesday. “It’s unfortunate. The headlines kept saying 71 years old but he wasn’t in bad shape. He wasn’t like an old man.

“He was a great resident of the building, liked by all,” he said. “We’re shocked and saddened to see him go. He will be missed.”

Adams was riding north on East Drive near East 84th Street around 8:20 a.m. Monday when an unleashed Golden Retriever ran in front of his bike, sending him flying over the handlebars.

The avid cyclist landed on the pavement, gravely injured despite wearing a helmet.

Adams was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the owner of the dog remained at the scene, but no charges have been filed while cops continue to investigate the incident. The dog was uninjured.

Dogs are allowed to be off the leash at certain sections of the park before 9 a.m., but it is not immediately clear if the section where Adams was fatally injured is one of those areas.

Charlie, the building manager, said he’s had run-ins with unleashed pups at the park before.

“I run in Central Park myself,” he said. “Last time I did a half marathon, [ran into] a dog, similar situation, but I wasn’t on a bike. It’s scary right now.”
