National GOP groups and leaders are escalating support for Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) in his race against Democratic former congresswoman Mary Peltola.
Vice President JD Vance visited Fairbanks for a rally with Sullivan on Monday, and President Donald Trump is planning to visit the state next week. The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC affiliated with Senate Republicans, has spent more than $18 million in the race, one of the most competitive battlegrounds to determine control of the Senate.
Americans for Prosperity, a free-market conservative group, is deploying canvassers and spending $3.4 million on ads supporting Sullivan — more than Sullivan’s campaign itself, according to AdImpact. Their message: Peltola is not as independent as she says she is.
“Dan Sullivan has a vision of government that trusts free Alaskans to make choices for themselves,” AFP Action senior adviser Kevin Greene said in an email.
Peltola’s supporters feel Sullivan could be harmed by the national Republican brand. She has highlighted cuts to federal programs that are essential for Alaska, including Medicaid and public radio.
Jim Lottsfeldt, a consultant working with pro-Peltola super PACs, said he hopes Trump “comes more than once.”
