Hollywood’s annual celebration of all that is television is leaving traditional television next year to stream on Amazon Prime.
It’s all part of a six-year partnership with Amazon that gives the streamer global telecast rights to the Emmy Awards ceremony, the Television Academy announced Tuesday. The Emmys will be in front of the streamer’s paywall, meaning viewers can tune in without paying a fee, the academy said.

The move to streaming mirrors a broader trend, as streamers increasingly secure the rights to air live events that were once the domain of network and cable television. Platforms hope to attract new users, and the organizers of awards ceremonies hope to appeal to wider — younger, more global — audiences.
Amazon Prime airs NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” and the Academy of Country Music Awards. Netflix also streams some major NFL games, comedy roasts and the Screen Actors Guild awards; six of the top 10 new-member-sign-up days were because of live events, Netflix leaders said in a recent earnings call. And then, starting in 2029, YouTube will have exclusive global rights to stream the Oscars.
