Former news anchor learns fate for stabbing her mother to death believing she was ‘the devil’

A deranged former TV news anchor has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering her elderly mother on Halloween — having claimed she “had to kill her” because she was “the devil.”

Angelynn “Angie” Mock, who for years had worked as a morning news host in St. Louis and Oklahoma City, pleaded guilty to murdering her 80-year-old mom, Anita Avers, on Halloween morning last year at their home in Wichita, Kansas. She will not be eligible for parole for 25 years, according to KWCH.

The mom was found in her bed with multiple stab wounds — and her ranting 48-year-old daughter was outside the house with cuts on her hands.

Angelynn Mock, 47, who was charged with first-degree murder, is shown in this undated photo. Mock, a former TV anchor, pleaded guilty to killing her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers.

“I’d kill that bitch to have my mom back any day. I don’t even know who she is anymore,” Mock said, according to the affidavit.

“I know, I believe she’s the devil.”

Mock, 48, later told investigators she went to her mother’s room to talk about an upcoming job interview at local Wichita news station KSN and found her sharpening knives.

She initially accused her mom of coming at her with a blade, saying she then overpowered her as they fought — accusing her mom of spewing “venom,” telling her daughter, “I know you’re f–king Jesus Christ.”

Mock said she then grabbed the knife, pinned her mother down and stabbed her — claiming she had no choice.

“I had to kill her, she wasn’t going to stop,” Mock said.

Mock had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and suffered from delusions and depression, her stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators.

She frequently would spiral into delusional states, claiming people around her were “robots” and “not real people,” he said. She also claimed that she spoke to God and called herself the Anti-Christ — and got upset when others didn’t believe her.

She was taking medication and was prone to angry outbursts, but was never violent, according to Barry.

Years earlier, Mock had an explosive outburst that led to her being held at a psychiatric hospital for roughly two weeks, according to the affidavit.

The most recent episode her stepfather could recall was three or four weeks before the killing — when she erupted at family members during a card game.

Mock was initially found not mentally fit to stand trial in January and a judge ordered that she go to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation and treatment, putting the criminal proceedings on hold.

She pleaded guilty in August. She was sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole for 25 years, a judge ruled Monday.

Mock previously worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and later at KOKH in Oklahoma City, but was working in sales at a data management software company at the time of the murder.
