A tractor pulling about 20 people on a hayride in a small village near the border of New York and Pennsylvania flipped on Sunday afternoon, leaving at least six people seriously injured.
The accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. in Wellsburg, N.Y., according to Sheriff Bill Schrom of Chemung County.
He said that one of his lieutenants, who was nearby, witnessed the crash, which happened near the intersection of Berwick Turnpike and Comfort Hill Road.
The tractor appeared to be going at a high rate of speed and was out of control, Sheriff Schrom said in an interview.
When the hayride reached the intersection, Sheriff Schrom said that the driver swerved to the right, causing the tractor to start to roll.
As that happened, the wagon it was pulling became disconnected from the tractor and all of its passengers, most of whom were children, were ejected.
Sheriff Schrom said one person was airlifted to a hospital.
At least five other people were taken to medical facilities by ambulance, he said, and about eight other people were taken by friends or family.
“There was a volunteer fire department nearby so everyone reacted quickly, but it didn’t look good for a few of the people who left here,” the sheriff said.
