President Donald Trump’s camp threatened his alma mater in 2016 to bury his deepest insecurity, according to biographer Michael Wolff.
Wolff made the claim that Trump has been trying to hide his academic records in a Saturday episode of “Inside Trump’s Head,” which he co-hosts with Joanna Coles. The episode was built around the fears he believes drive the president. Topping the list was being seen as unintelligent.
Wolff recalled a conversation with former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon about what Russian President Vladimir Putin might have on Trump. Bannon waved off the rumored tapes and the president’s finances, Wolff said, before settling on Trump’s school records.
“During the 2016 campaign, there was a fear that those transcripts were going to come out,” Wolff said. “And then they came down very hard on the University of Pennsylvania and basically said, you know, we will take every action against you if those transcripts are not buried.”
Wolff tied the effort to what he described as a lifelong struggle.
“I think that he probably does have some learning disability, which I think is very, you know, uncomfortable for him,” Wolff said. “That is one of the roots of his major insecurities.”
Coles asked why Fordham University, where Trump studied before transferring to Penn’s Wharton School, had never released his records.
“I’m sure that he has already gone and secured these transcripts at both Fordham and the University of Pennsylvania,” Wolff said.
“We haven’t seen his high school transcripts. We haven’t seen either of his college transcripts,” Wolff said. “They have been so successful in locking that stuff down. And, you know, if they were good, he would have floated them out there immediately.”
Wolff also recounted asking Sam Nunberg, one of Trump’s earliest political hires, to explain the president during the first months of his term.
“Sam looked at me like he was incredulous,” Wolff said. “And he said to me, he said, ‘You don’t get it.’ And I said, ‘What?’ And then Sam said, ‘He’s an idiot.’”
