The Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial board delivered a blunt warning to President Donald Trump’s family on Friday as scrutiny continues to grow over Donald Trump Jr.’s business dealings: “Better lawyer up.”
“Does the Trump family know what is about to hit them?” the board asked, warning of subpoenas, investigations and congressional testimony over the family’s cryptocurrency investments “and other deals that have enriched them while President Trump is in office?”
The editorial board pointed to Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) as a reason the Trump family “might want to pay attention.”
The Republican senator offered “the best preview” of how the next two years will unfold if Republicans lose control of Congress in a letter calling for the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate and subpoena Trump Jr. following reports that a Russian oligarch helped bankroll his wedding.
“A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected Oligarch is something else,” Curtis wrote in the letter.
Curtis also pointed directly to his own party’s investigations of former President Joe Biden’s son, the board noted.
“Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden’s foreign relations,” Curtis wrote. “We should not unplug it now.”
The Journal argued Friday that the controversy could be only the beginning for the president’s family, with control of Congress at stake in November and Democrats eyeing investigations into Trump-linked business ventures.
“The Trump family businesses will be in the spotlight on Capitol Hill for the next two years,” the board warned. “Better lawyer up in any case.”
