A multivehicle crash on Interstate 95 in South Carolina on Thursday morning brought the major highway to a standstill. Local officials worked into the afternoon to reopen both lanes of traffic.
The Santee Fire Service District said 15 tractor-trailers and 50 cars were involved in a pileup around 9 a.m., which occurred at I-95’s 100-mile marker, according to a social media post by Clarendon County Fire Rescue.
There were four entrapments and at least one person was medevaced to a hospital; the district treated at least 11 people with minor injuries. So far, no fatalities have been reported.
The cause of the pileup was heavy, dense fog, the district said.
Videos on social media show dozens of vehicles — tractor-trailers, trucks and cars — crumpled on a bridge over Lake Marion that connects Clarendon and Orangeburg Counties.
Both lanes of traffic were initially closed, but the northbound lanes reopened around 12:30 p.m.
Multiple state agencies, including the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Department of Transportation, were on the scene.
Highway officials said they expected it would take “an extended period of time” to clear the bridge and reopen traffic.
Before the crash, highway officials had warned of heavy fog in the area, with low visibility, and cautioned drivers to slow down and increase following distance.
