LONDON — British police arrested a man with dual British-Iranian citizenship Thursday on suspicion of involvement in a possible terrorist plot targeting an air base used by U.S. bombers in the war with Iran, officials said.
The arrest, the sixth so far in the case, is the first time British authorities said they had taken an Iranian national into custody as part of their expanding investigation. The disclosure follows British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s statement Wednesday that there were “strong indications” that “Iran played a part” in a suspected plot, which raised alarms on both sides of the Atlantic and triggered evacuations of dozens of homes near Royal Air Force Fairford, a major air base 80 miles west of London.
British police provided no further details on the latest suspect beyond identifying him as a 27-year-old man who was detained in London. All five men who were arrested after authorities said they were caught approaching the base in three vans shortly after midnight Sunday have been released on bail but remain under investigation.
