The Trump administration on Wednesday began sending $500 Affordable Care Act refund checks to nearly 1 million Americans in 30 states, two administration officials said Thursday.
The rebates are accompanied by a letter from President Donald Trump touting his record, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss administration policies.
“I am proud to return your money to you, and I will never stop fighting to put the American People FIRST, restore Affordability, protect your hard-earned money, and lower the Cost of Healthcare,” Trump wrote in the letter, which was viewed by The Washington Post.
The note mentions TrumpRx, the Rural Health Transformation Program and other administration policies meant to address health care and its costs, weeks ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Trump said in September that rebate checks would go to people he says were overcharged Affordable Care Act (ACA) user fees during the Biden administration. Administration officials said the money would be drawn from fees used to fund operations of the ACA federal insurance exchange.
The 30 states where people may receive checks rely on the federal government to facilitate the ACA marketplace — including Florida, Iowa, Ohio and other anticipated midterm battlegrounds.
