‘They voted against me too often’: Trump snaps at his Supreme Court picks

President Donald Trump used a wide-ranging Time magazine interview to question whether he made a mistake handing three of his own Supreme Court nominees lifetime appointments, griping that Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaughand Amy Coney Barrett haven’t been loyal enough to him.

Speaking with Time Senior Political Correspondent Eric Cortellessa and Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs, Trump was asked directly whether he regrets nominating the three justices after previously calling them “shells of their former selves.”

His answer suggested that he likely does.

“Yeah. Yeah. What can I do? I put them in. They voted against me too often,” Trump said. “I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often. They vote for me too. The Democrats stick like glue — those three [liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson], they virtually never vary. You can come up with the worst thing in the world and they’ll vote as a group. And while I don’t like it, there’s something I admire about it: there’s loyalty.”

Trump went on to claim that liberal justices are loyal to Democratic presidents even though “Biden doesn’t even know who the hell they are,” before pivoting to grievances over the Supreme Court’s birthright citizenship ruling and its decision striking down his tariffs, which he claimed cost the country “trillions of dollars” and said could have been avoided if the court had included “a little clause saying any money paid does not have to be paid back,” which he said “would have saved $400 billion.”

Asked point-blank whether loyalty is what he wants from his Supreme Court picks, Trump didn’t hedge. “I do like loyalty, yeah,” he said.

The comments come as Trump’s relationship with the court he helped shape with three appointments has grown increasingly strained over rulings that haven’t gone his way.
