Critics accused the Supreme Court of “rubber stamping death sentences” after it let President Donald Trump resume sending immigrants to countries that are not their own.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling in favor of what are called third-country deportations, which critics worry will force immigrants to dangerous countries accused of human rights abuses. The unsigned emergency order allows the Trump administration to restart the rapid removal of immigrants to countries other than their own while the court prepares to hear arguments on the policy in December.
The three liberal justices said they would have denied the government’s request. A federal court had blocked the removals unless migrants were given a chance to contest them, including by raising fears that they would be persecuted or tortured abroad.
The Trump administration has sent more than 25,000 people to third countries, including Liberia, Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic, according to The New York Times.
The ruling set off a wave of outrage online.
“The horror of this I really don’t know if there are words to describe how evil this is,” podcaster and rural health care advocate Michelle Rathman blasted in a post on Bluesky. “Without any due process, thousands of people will be sent to die. SCOTUS [is] rubber stamping death sentences.”
Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) called the third-country deportation policy dangerous in reaction to the ruling.
“Deporting someone to a country they’ve never set foot in, with no family, no ties, and no guarantee of safety, is reckless cruelty,” Pettersen wrote on X. “The Supreme Court’s decision to allow this is deeply heartbreaking & dangerous. We cannot treat human lives like this. I will never stop fighting for basic due process, oversight, and an immigration system that actually respects and honors the rights of EVERY person.”
Political scientist Norm Ornstein delivered a blunt reaction, calling the court’s conservative majority “six monstrous partisan hacks.”
