These Campus Romance Novels Will Make You Swoon

College is a time of metamorphosis. For many young people, it’s the first moment in your life you’re on your own. And while you’re juggling big decisions and adultlike responsibilities, you’re also exploring newfound freedoms and navigating relationships — including, often, romantic ones.

The dynamic potential of that period makes every feeling more intense. It’s part of why I’ve been drawn to the university setting so often in my work — from my young adult romance “This Could be Forever” to my recent anthology of love stories set on H.B.C.U. campuses, “You’ve Got a Place Here, Too.” And I’m not alone.

Here are some campus love stories I cherish: some traditional romance novels, others fantasies that break up the darkness of academia with a heady dose of love. Their raw emotions and twisty will-they-won’t-they’s will have you dreaming of leafy quads and yearning for more.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown

by Talia Hibbert

Danika Brown is an overworked Ph.D. student who doesn’t have time for romance. Zafir Ansari is an anxious ex-rugby player turned campus security guard who loves listening to romance audiobooks and hopes to find “the One.” When he and Dani go viral thanks to a video of him carrying her out of an elevator during a fire drill (#DrRugbae), Zaf sees an opportunity to bring awareness to his sports charity — and Dani sees a perfect candidate for a no-strings hookup buddy to help her blow off steam. Their top-tier banter and slow journey from fake dating to confronting their fears with love had me smiling for the entire ride.
